Your easiest resolution

New_Years_ResolutionsSo who out there has already failed to get started on those New Year’s resolutions?  Haven’t made it to the gym yet?  Did you feel compelled to finish off that last piece of carrot cake before starting the big diet?  (What?  No!  Of course I’m not speaking from personal experience.  Really.)

So often in January we set ourselves up for failure by picking goals that, if we’re honest with ourselves, are just slightly beyond our reach.  We’re going to lose 30 pounds.  We’re going to work out twice a day for the next three months.  Our motivation is at an all time high (usually because our muscle tone is at an all time low) and we want results instantly.  And we might start out strong, but eventually we fizzle because our efforts are simply not sustainable.

But I can give you a resolution that you can take care of lickity split (well, practically).  And it most likely won’t raise your heart rate and it definitely doesn’t require massive amounts of push ups.

Repeat after me:  I resolve to complete my advance directives.

Didn’t that feel good?  Now, the only thing this resolution requires is serious thought.  Who would you want making important decisions about your health if you couldn’t speak for yourself?  What decisions would you want that person to make?  Do those closest to you know how you feel about life-sustaining procedures?  These are all questions that can be answered by simply putting advance directives in place.

All the information you need to get started can be found on our website.  We’ve got copies of the Living Will, Health Care Power of Attorney, Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment (MOST) form, and the Do Not Resuscitate form (DNR).  There are even some websites for additional resources if you find yourself wanting even more information.

I promise you will get just as much satisfaction and sense of completion by filling out your advance directives as you would spending half an hour on the StairMaster.  But, by the time you’re finished, you won’t be covered in sweat.  And then you can reward yourself with cake.  Just a tiny piece because of that pesky diet.  Or you could always just do the massive amounts of pushups . . . . Yeah, I’d go with cake too.

So true! Being a single parent of a teenage daughter, when I started answering the questions of what I wanted done I was so glad that I did, there was no way she would have been able to and my immediate family live states away. Now I don’t have to worry and she won’t have to be faced with making those decisions. If you don’t do it for yourself then do it for your kids 🙂 Now I have to finish eating this piece of cake before I head out to the gym 🙂
