April showers bring May fun

May 2, 2016

LN Hospice Regatta logo_2015You know that phrase, “April showers bring May flowers”? Well, we got our April showers in Charlotte on Saturday night, didn’t we? They snuck in at the 11th hour (literally), drenching us all with pounding rain along with some serious thunder and lightning.

For Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman, those April showers are bringing not May flowers, but massive amounts of May fun — in the form of the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party. The Regatta Party, affectionately known as “the best party on the lake”, is happening this Saturday at the Peninsula Club in Cornelius. The fun will begin at 6:30pm when you can browse the silent auction items while sipping a cocktail and tasting delicious hors d’oeuvres. After a delightful dinner and a stirring presentation, there will be more fun and games and a chance to bid on some amazing live auction items as well.

And, brand new this year, you can purchase a “golden ticket” which gives you the chance to win an unbelievable trip to one of three destinations: Punta Cana Resort in the Dominican Republic, Fairmont Chateau in Lake Louise, Canada, or the Meritage Resort in Napa Valley. We’re only selling 100 of these tickets and half of them have already been purchased so don’t wait too long to capitalize on this opportunity! All trips include $1,000 in spending money and airfare for two. A one in a hundred chance for all of that? Them’s good odds, if you ask me! Golden tickets are available on our website — get yours before they’re all gone!

Your emcees for the evening will be WSOC anchor Allison Latos and WSOC meteorologist Keith Monday. They will charm you throughout the event and keep you well informed of all the goings on — who’s speaking next, when it’s time to win your golden ticket trip (because you are going to win it, right?), and when you need to finalize your silent auction bids.

At this point, all you have to do is buy your ticket, show up, and have a good time. And I’m not a scientist or meteorologist, but if you could equate the severity of those April showers we had on Saturday night to the amount of May fun you’ll have at the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party this weekend, I can predict you’re gonna get drenched.

Tickets are $125 and are available on our website. All proceeds benefit Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman.  For more information, contact Nancy Cole at 704.335.4312.

Special thanks to our most generous presenting sponsors: Huntersville Ford, Kathryn M. Keele, and Lake Norman Transportation Services.

Goodbye winter, hello Regatta Party!

April 22, 2015

LN Hospice Regatta logo_2015I just saw on Twitter that they got 9.5 inches of snow in some (quite unlucky) areas of Wisconsin yesterday and today. While I feel very sorry for those poor souls who are dragging out the shovels and the snow blowers yet one more time, I can’t help but feel smug.  It’s finally springtime in the Carolinas and we are enjoying some glorious sunshine, bluebird skies, and dry weather.  Each year when we finally get this gorgeous respite, we also get a tingling of anticipation.  You can almost sense something delightfully fun is in your future.  And it is!  The 15th annual Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party is coming your way on Saturday, May 2!

If you haven’t purchased your tickets to the “best party on the lake”, you still have a chance because we have a few left (which you can find on our website). The Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party is an upscale evening at The Peninsula Club in Cornelius and it features delicious food, music, games, an inspirational speaker, and a well-stocked cash bar.  You will also enjoy some amazing items up for bid in the live and silent auctions.  And the best part about the auctions?  You can do your bidding online from the comfort of your seat, using only your smart phone and your cunning, cutthroat strategies to get the items that you want.

Need some incentive to get your tickets?  How about a sneak peek into some of the items up for bid?  We’ve got an unbelievable trip to the Napa Valley which includes a 3-night stay at a fabulous resort and a three-hour gourmet dinner for two on the Napa Valley Wine Train.  This trip also includes round-trip coach class airfare for two.  Yeah, you can just go ahead and sign me up for that one.

We’ve also got a week-long stay in a two bedroom condo (which sleeps eights) in Hilton Head.  One week of hanging out on the beach, listening to the waves, and catching up with your friends (who will adore you for inviting them).

Or maybe you just want a quick getaway to the mountains?  We’ve got a one-night stay at a bed & breakfast in Banner Elk.

Plus, we’ve got golf packages, jewelry, nights at the Grove Park Inn, and a ton more.  To put it simply, there are more than enough reasons for you to get your bidding on at this awesome event.  Not to mention it supports a wonderful organization making a huge impact within its community — Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman.

The party starts at 6:30pm on Saturday, May 2 at the Peninsula Club in Cornelius.  Tickets are $100, which is a tiny investment in the massive amount of fun you’re going to have, especially if you end up outbidding me for the Napa trip.  Now, if you’re coming here from snowy Wisconsin, we’ll probably let you in for free.  You’ve seriously suffered enough.

A HUGE thanks to our generous presenting sponsors: Huntersville Ford, Kathryn Keele, and Lake Norman Transportation Services, Inc.  We sincerely appreciate your amazing support!

Who else needs a relaxing vacation?

April 30, 2014

by Andrea Powell, HPCCR Marketing Manager

Have you missed me, loyal readers?  Have you even noticed that I’ve been conspicuously absent for the past few weeks?  Well, I have a good reason.

Over three weeks ago, in an attempt by me and my husband to get away from the kids for a few days, we went out to Utah to go skiing.  On our first ski run (on the first day, of course), I fell and broke my shoulder.  Long story short, we were on a red-eye home that night and I had surgery a few days later.  Needless to say, my typing skills have suffered somewhat.

It has been suggested to me by many friends (ok, all of them) that perhaps for our next vacation, my husband and I should choose something a little more low-key.  I tell you all this because I have the perfect opportunity to make that suggestion a reality.  I can bid on some fantastic (non-dangerous) vacations at the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party being held this Saturday night in Cornelius.

If you’ve been a subscriber to this blog for a while, you’re probably pretty familiar with this awesome party by now.  Held each year at the beautiful Peninsula Club, the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party is an exciting evening of music, food, games, and live and silent auctions.  All proceeds benefit Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman so it ends up being a really fun night that helps a truly worthy organization.  The party is being presented this year by Keller Williams Luxury Homes International and a HUGE thank you goes out to this most generous organization!

Last year, we introduced electronic bidding and it was an enormous success.  By simply registering your cell phone (smart phone or not), you can bid and then automatically keep tabs on the items you’re interested in.  No hovering.  No constantly checking bid sheets to see if someone else is trying to steal your item from you.  In fact, the silent auction site is already live!  If you are planning on coming to the party on Saturday night, you can start bidding NOW!

Now, the live auction items are the ones I should really be thinking about.  A Lake Norman dinner cruise for six?  That sounds like a peaceful evening, and fairly low on the danger meter.  Or maybe the trip to the Westin Lake Las Vegas Resort & Spa.  This shoulder could use a spa day.  The trip (first class airline tickets!) includes four days and three nights and daily breakfast.  I can certainly use my left hand to pull those slot machine arms.  And how relaxing does a four-night stay in Bermuda sound?  This injury has really stressed me out.  A few days relaxing on a beach couldn’t hurt. . . .

Even if you’re not looking for a lengthy trip or fantastic jewelry (sapphire and diamond ring, anyone?), there are plenty of golf packages, wines, restaurant packages, artwork, salon offers, sporting event opportunities, and more.  All just one touch away on your phone.  A tip: charge your phone before you come!  You don’t want to lose out on that night at the Grove Park Inn because your battery died!

The forecast for Saturday could not be more perfect for this party; it should be a beautiful evening.  Along with the usual delicious food, there will be fun music, and an inspiring speaker.  And you’ll have an opportunity to support Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman during the “Raise Your Hands & Hearts” portion of the evening.  You’ll go home well-fed, emotionally fulfilled, and hopefully toting some awesome merchandise!

If I don’t end up with a trip to Vegas or Bermuda, I might have to guilt my husband into bidding on some jewelry.  Just like they say, “Pain is temporary, but diamonds are forever.” (Someone said that, right?  Right?  Well, if they didn’t, they really should have.)

The Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party (presented by Keller Williams Luxury Homes International) starts at 6:30pm at the Peninsula Club in Cornelius.  For more information, contact Nancy Cole, Director of Special Events, at 704.335.4312.  Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman is a regional office of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region.

Get your smart phones ready!

May 3, 2013

by Andrea Powell, HPCCR Electronic Communications Manager

regatta logoYour smart phone is going to be your best friend on Saturday night.  In fact, it’s not going to leave your hand all night.  What’s more, it won’t be considered rude for you to look at it every five minutes.  No, that will actually be encouraged!  Why, you wonder?  Why will you be so obsessed with your phone on Saturday night?

Because this year, at the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party, it’s going to win you some amazing stuff.

For the first time ever, you will be able to use smart phone technology to bid on auction items.  When you arrive on Saturday night, you’ll “register” your phone.  You’ll get a very nice text message welcoming you the bidding process and then you’re ready to start!  You can bid by using the text function on your phone (you’ll see how all this works when you get there — it involves entering the item number and your bid), or you can click on a link in that welcoming text message and go to a personal bidding page to make your move.  And don’t worry — if you don’t have a smart phone, there will be a plethora of folks in bright red shirts who will have smart tablets and will be happy to enter a bid for you.

You want the better news?  You can start bidding before the party!  Yep, the site is already set up and the tantalizing merchandise is waiting for your opening bids.  Just go to http://myab.co/events/4X/i/silent/ to see all the auction items available and to read directions for registering your phone.

Of course, we will also have the usual succulent food and enlivening beverages.  And we have a guest speaker lined up who is going to blow you away with her unforgettable story, her outstanding poise, and her inspiring generosity.

All proceeds for the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party benefit Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman.  So while you are busy winning that Grove Park Inn package, you are also helping provide exceptional end-of-life care to members of your own community.  I can’t think of a better win-win situation.

So between now and 6:30pm on Saturday, you’ve got two important things to do: check out the items up for grabs online, and more importantly, charge up your phone!!  You need that puppy to be at 100% when you walk in the door.  Do you really want to lose that weekend at the Grove Park Inn because of a battery snafu?  I think not.  As Louis L’Amour said, “Victory is won not in miles but in. . . . battery power”.  Or something like that, right?

The fun starts at 6:30pm at the Peninsula Club in Cornelius.  For more information, contact Nancy Cole, Manager of Special Events, at 704.335.4312.  Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman is a regional office of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region.

What’s your hover strategy?

May 12, 2011

You may not realize it, but there’s a fun side to hospice too.  It comes out every once in a while, and when it does, look out!

Tomorrow night is one of those times.  Each year we have a party around the time of the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta.  It’s our one late-night event that puts us home pleasantly exhausted (feeling all young and crazy again), at a decidedly unearly hour.

It’s a night of entertainment, excellent food and libations, and conniving strategy.  Where does the conniving part come in?  Well, we’ve got both live and silent auctions and, once you get your heart set on one of the many awesome items up for grabs, you will do whatever it takes to make it yours.

You will keep tabs on your competition who will be bidding for your silent auction item (the one you saw when you walked in the door and simply knew that fate had left it there just for you).  You will go back and subsequently make more bids.  And when the warning comes that there are only minutes left to finalize bids, you will hover over your item like a mama bird protecting her nest.  It will get nutty and, man, you will have a good time!

So what will you be hovering over this year?  The real question is what will you not?  We have a fabulous vacation to Royal Palm Beach Resort in St. Maarten, and accommodations at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, the Harbourview Inn in Charleston, and the Ritz-Carlton in Atlanta.  You can bid on a Bonefish Grill gift basket (which includes dinner for eight!), personal chef services, beautiful works of art, jewelry, and so much more.

So put on your fancy cocktail duds (no jeans allowed at this shindig!) and join us at The Peninsula Club on Lake Norman tomorrow night.  Sounds like a party you don’t want to miss, right?  Tickets for all of this fun are a bargain at $85 and include an expansive dinner and dessert buffet, music, entertainment, and, of course, the auctions.

By definition, we can’t feel young and crazy unless the party people show up.  That’s you.  Tomorrow night, it will be your turn to go home pleasantly exhausted.  Because you will.  And if you’re lucky, you’ll go home with a bunch of loot in tow!  Better start practicing your hovering.

Proceeds from the Lake Norman Hospice Regatta Party benefit Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman, a regional office of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region.  The evening begins at 6:30 pm and lasts until 11pm.  For more information, or to purchase your tickets online, visit our website, hpccr.org.
