Today’s the DAY! #GivingTuesdayCLT

December 1, 2015

by Andrea Powell, HPCCR Marketing Manager

GTCLT12_1 blueWe’re so excited we can hardly stand it! The day we’ve been planning for (and when I say we, I mean HPCCR and 108 other not-for-profits) is finally here! It’s #GivingTuesdayCLT! That means today we’ll find out if we reached our goal of raising $2 million for the populations we collectively serve in the Charlotte region!

We’ve been tweeting, updating Facebook statuses, sharing Instagram photos, sending emails, and writing newsletter articles about #GivingTuesdayCLT. But you know what? It ultimately comes down to you.

That’s right. You. The loyal supporters of these 109 not-for-profits will be the real heroes today. We couldn’t do it without your generosity. Without your vision of how this kind of money can help your neighbors in need. You will be the reason why struggling families will have meals, children will receive healthcare services, pets will be adopted, families of service members will receive financial support, cancer research will be funded, students will have school supplies. . . . the list of how you’re helping is truly endless.

And you will also be the reason why HPCCR will be able to continue funding Chameleon’s Journey (our grief camp for kids and teens), why we will be able to care for anyone who needs our exceptional end-of-life care (regardless of their ability to pay), and why we can offer community education everywhere in our service area.

So have you made a donation to HPCCR for #GivingTuesdayCLT? If not, do you want to? It’s easy — just click on our donation form to make your gift and then choose #GivingTuesdayCLT in the drop down menu for the question, “What brought you to the site to give today?”

Thank you. Seriously, thank you so very much. On behalf of all of us participating in #GivingTuesdayCLT, we can’t begin to express our gratitude for helping us reach this wonderful goal. There is a powerful surge of kindness surrounding this holiday season and your generosity has helped to ignite it.

May this spirit of compassion surround you and your family throughout this wondrous time.

Pass the test on #GivingTuesdayCLT

November 18, 2015

by Andrea Powell, HPCCR Marketing Manager

GTCLT12_1 blueOk people, today I’m going to test your loyalty to HPCCR. And I’m also going to see if you’ve been paying attention to us like the good hospice supporters you claim to be. You ready?

So. . . if you follow us on Twitter and Facebook (and if you don’t, you need to do so immediately), you know that HPCCR is a part of something really exciting happening in Charlotte right now. Something monumental and awe-inspiring and humbling. Because this “thing” we’re doing? It represents more than just our personal mission. Oh, it’s way bigger than that. We’re tapping into a pure love and a generosity that’s bigger than all of us. And it’s going to make an impact, believe me. You’re going to want to be a part it. (You know, because you are a kind, sensitive human being, right?)

Here goes.

This year, Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region is participating in #GivingTuesdayCLT. For those of you not familiar with #GivingTuesday, (but you probably are because you’re so intelligent!) the idea started in 2011 in an effort to help people change the way they think about participating in the holidays – making it less about commercialism and more about the giving nature of the season. It happens every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving; a few days after Black Friday and the day after Cyber Monday when all the online “deals” are found.

Quote - KingShare Charlotte, a local not-for-profit that helps people find ways to get involved in their community, has brought the #GivingTuesday concept local by creating #GivingTuesdayCLT. From November 10 through December 1 (which is the actual #GivingTuesday), HPCCR and over 100 other not-for-profits are partnering with Share Charlotte to try to raise a total of $2 million. Can you even imagine all the good that can do for our local community? Or fathom how many of our neighbors in need can be supported by that kind of money?

The not-for-profits involved in #GivingTuesdayCLT are wonderfully varied; literally every population you can think of is supported by one of these organizations — children, the homeless, teachers, students, the arts community, cancer fighters and survivors, the environment, the bereaved, those struggling to get jobs, animal rights. . .  The list goes on and on.

And, of course, Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region is among the list. Which brings us to that loyalty test I mentioned earlier. You want to show your passion for hospice care? Then make a donation to HPCCR for #GivingTuesdayCLT! We know it’s not the actual #GivingTuesday yet, but any amount you give will go toward that $2 million goal. And there’s even more incentive. Share Charlotte has acquired five generous sponsors (thank you Bank of America, Foundation for the Carolinas, Google Fiber, Knight Foundation, and Reemprise Fund!) who have offered matching funds to the participating not-for-profits. Basically, if HPCCR raises a certain percentage of the $2 million total, we’ll get that same percentage of the matching funds! And since you are a super-duper loyal follower and an amazingly generous supporter (has all the brown-nosing and flattery worked yet??), you are well aware of all the great things we could do with that extra funding.

#whatsyourgift_2So here’s how you do it. Go to our website to access our online donation form. Make your awesome gift. Then choose #GivingTuesdayCLT in the drop down menu for the question, “What brought you to the site to give today?” The process couldn’t be easier!

Those of you going to our site right now to make a donation have passed the loyalty test with flying colors. You’ll have our endless gratitude and we’ll continue to flagrantly flatter you until you blush. And the rest of you? Your test grade is rapidly dropping, people! Our shameless, over-the-top brown-nosing doesn’t come free, you know. . .

Assuage your guilt on #Giving Tuesday

December 2, 2014

by Andrea Powell, HPCCR Marketing Manager

Well, did you max out your credit cards over the weekend?  Did you take advantage of all the deals from Black Friday (technically, I guess, it all started on Thursday, didn’t it?!) all the way through Cyber Monday?  Are you feeling just a tad bit guilty over how much you spent?

Well, here’s the good news: there is a way to make yourself feel better.  The bad news: it’s not necessarily free.  BUT.  It’s for a very good cause.  Lots of causes actually.  Because today is (drumroll, please). . . #Giving Tuesday.  It’s your day to make a difference.

This is the third year for #Giving Tuesday.  And each year it seems to gain momentum.  The idea started in 2011 when a couple of foundations and other non-profits got together and decided that the commercialism of the holiday season had begun to outweigh the charitable and giving nature of the holiday season.  In an effort to help people change the way they think about, talk about, and participate in, the holidays, they decided to create a day for folks to give back.  In a nutshell, #Giving Tuesday celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations.

So if you’re a loyal reader of this blog, you’ve read our stories, right?  We’ve had some doozies this year — patient Bobby Blackwell receiving a much-needed golf cart to get around on his property; our Kids Path patient, Brooklyn, living with much better quality of life; another patient describing how her Chanel No. 5 lotion brightened her day; an adorable woman named Thelma with the best attitude ever, battling breast cancer again. . . just to name a few.  The fact is, HPCCR could not have helped any of these families without the support of our loyal and generous donors.

And that’s where you come in.  If HPCCR is the organization that you want to support on this #Giving Tuesday, we will gladly receive your act of kindness.  The dollars we raise from our friends in the community allow us to accept ALL patients who need our care, regardless of their situation.  Donations allow us to provide small moments that may seem like nothing, but in reality mean everything to a hospice patient — a warm bath, a gentle massage, a shoulder to lean on, vital information with which to make important decisions, and so much more.

If there are other organizations close to your heart, give them some love today too — spread the wealth.  Because the intent of #Giving Tuesday — serving others and bringing the holidays back to what really matters — is gracious and generous.  It encompasses the nature of our best selves.

So do something nice today on #Giving TuesdayDonateVolunteer.  And then you can let your best self lounge, guilt-free, on the couch in front of that 50-inch, flat-screen TV screen that you got for a screaming good deal on Black Friday.

Warm your soul on #Giving Tuesday

Well, did you max out your credit cards over the weekend?  Did you take advantage of all the deals from Black Friday (technically, I guess, it all started on Thursday this year, didn’t it?!) all the way through Cyber Monday?  Are you feeling just a tad bit guilty over how much you spent?

Well, here’s the good news: there is a way to make yourself feel better.  The bad news: it’s not necessarily free.  BUT.  It’s for a very good cause.  Lots of causes actually.  Because today is (drumroll, please). . . #Giving Tuesday (yes, the hashtag is supposed to be there — social media stuff).  It’s your day to make a difference.

This is the inaugural year for #Giving Tuesday.  The idea started last year when a couple of foundations and other non-profits got together and decided that the commercialism of the holiday season has begun to outweigh the charitable and giving nature of the holiday season.  In an effort to help people change the way they think about, talk about, and participate in, the holidays, they decided to create a day for folks to give back.  In a nutshell, #Giving Tuesday celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations.

What does that mean for you?  Well, you can volunteer at an organization that supports your passionate cause.  Sign up to purchase or make a holiday meal for a family in need.  Drop off canned goods at a food bank.  Have a bake sale and donate the proceeds to a not-for-profit whose mission tugs at your heart.  Go through your closets.  Collect clothes that you don’t wear anymore, or coats that your kids have outgrown and take them to the Salvation Army.  Or just simply make a donation to your favorite organization.  The whole point is to do something that reminds you of the giving nature of the holidays.  Acts of kindness that fuel the fires of your heart and warm your soul.

If HPCCR is the organization that you want to support, we will gladly accept your acts of kindness.  We have families under our care who would be thrilled to have a nice holiday meal, for example.  We have patients who would relish the conversation of a volunteer.  Family members who would benefit from a few minutes to get out and run errands without having to worry about their loved one.  And, of course, we would gratefully accept your donation too. (It’s no secret that the pockets of not-for-profits tend to run toward the shallow side.)

But, seriously, we don’t care which organization you want to support; we just hope you support one.  Because the intent of #Giving Tuesday — serving others and bringing the holidays back to what really matters — is gracious and generous.  It encompasses the nature of our best selves.

So do something nice today on #Giving Tuesday.  And then you can let your best self lounge, guilt-free, on the couch in front of that 50-inch, flat-screen TV screen that you got for a screaming good deal on Black Friday.
