You can be our corner piece
by Andrea Powell, HPCCR Marketing Manager
Congratulations! You made it through another year (well, almost!) And what a year it was! Government shutdowns, sequestration, health care changes . . . I’m exhausted just thinking about all that went on. But now we’re in that peaceful time. A lull, if you will, between the madness of the holidays and the beginning of the next year on the calendar. This week is always somewhat reflective for me — a time to evaluate my year and decide what I want to focus my energy on in the coming months.
It’s also traditionally a time when people make decisions about end-of-year giving. If you’re like me, you’ve got a stack of beautifully written letters and other appeals that started arriving in your mailbox over the summer and continued right through until Thanksgiving. And now you’ve got decisions to make. Which organizations touched your heart this year? Which ones could use your help? Well, to be blunt, all of them could. Not-for-profits depend on generous donors to fuel their programs. Donations are like the corner pieces of the puzzle — they are the starting point of the picture and without them, the landscape of the organization would never fully develop.
We’re no different. HPCCR is committed to caring for anyone who needs us, regardless of their situation. And sometimes that means providing unreimbursed care. Our donations help us cover the cost of grief care (like our Chameleon’s Journey Grief Camp), community outreach, education, and care for patients who have no insurance. Money from the community allows us to be there for frightened patients, to teach caregivers how to comfort their loved ones, and to have an after-hours staff who can respond when unexpected needs arise.
I always lament about how hospice is something that no one really knows about unless they have to. I wish that weren’t the case, because hospice care is truly an unbelievable blessing. But far too often HPCCR is called at the last minute. We just know that if the call had come earlier, we could have done so much more.
If you’ve had an experience with hospice, if you actually DO know how amazing our services are, please consider putting HPCCR on your short list for end-of-year donations. Your contribution may very well send a grieving kid to Chameleon’s Journey or purchase pain medication for a patient who can barely afford rent.
2013 was a tough year financially for all hospice organizations. But at HPCCR, we remained focused on what was important — giving patients our very best care. And that’s what we’ll do next year too, regardless of the economic outlook. We’re going to be THE end-of-life resource for our community. That’s a pretty big committment, you know? So if you want to help fill in the corner pieces of our puzzle, well, we would be humbly honored.
