Are you a compassionate sole?
by Andrea Powell, HPCCR Electronic Communications Manager
Nope, that’s not a typo in the title. Compassionate Soles — it’s the name of our Susan G. Komen For The Cure team. Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region is joining the walk in Charlotte for the third year in a row to show our support for breast cancer victims and their loved ones.
Our team is open to all Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region staff and friends. (That’s an invitation, folks, in case you couldn’t tell!) We’d love for you to join us on October 6 and walk in memory of a loved one or in honor of a brave individual currently battling breast cancer. You’ll get a nifty t-shirt with our Compassionate Soles logo which you can wear with pride as you hoof it for 3.1 entertaining miles.
Breast cancer affects so many people in the communities we serve. And we are honored to take care of them at the end of life. But you know what? We would actually be thrilled to see those numbers dwindle. We’d love nothing more than to care for fewer breast cancer patients because advances in research and medicine are wiping out the disease. And because greater awareness is causing women (and men!) to get screened early. So that’s why we’ll be out there on the first weekend of October– walking for a cure, walking for hope.
I’ve been out there every year so far and, trust me, it’s a great time. Yes, it’s an early morning, but nothing fosters a bond with your fellow walkers like drinking hot coffee on a cold morning with a group of people whose bed heads are just as bad as yours. Then the darkness fades and the sun starts its rise on a beautiful Saturday morning, and you’ll see an awe-inspiring sight. Men and women — everywhere you look — gathering together in their clever t-shirts (some of them downright naughty!) to walk for a cure.
It’s a true punch in the gut when you realize that every person out there has been affected in some way by breast cancer. Every. Single. Person. Thousands of them. And that’s when the feelings rise up within you. That’s when the sense of fellowship and the overwhelming excitement come together and you realize this is so much bigger than you thought. You are part of a huge effort to change the face of humanity. To rid the world of breast cancer forever. You are part of the hope.
This walk is humbling. Amazing. And every step will be more meaningful than you ever thought possible.
So join us. If you have a compassionate soul, we want you to be a Compassionate Sole. Together we can show breast cancer who’s boss.
